Resident’s Ignorance of ‘112 & 767’ Emergency Number Almost Cost Man’s Life in Ijegun
Residents of Alimosho LGA do not have knowledge of
the Lagos state designated Emergency Response number (112 or 767), Alimoshotides had recently uncovered.
This is evident from a reaction of residents towards
a recent emergency at Mutairu Ali Street along Ijegun Road.
The emergency, which involved a man alleged to be a
victim of a trailer accident, exposed the poor knowledge of the emergency
number by residents despite the continuous creation of safety consciousness by
Safety agencies.
Residents of the Street woke up as early as 7 am to
witness a helpless man with a plate of take-away rice sitting down on the
Street with lacerations on his face, legs, and belly.
The yet-to-be-identified man, who according to
eyewitnesses had been in the spot for about three days had no clothes on, could
only mutter a few audible words, and was unable to tell his address.
Not until Alimoshotides correspondent got
to the scene of the incident, the residents gathered at the scene had no idea
of what action to take due to ignorance of the emergency number.
Our correspondent, aware of the emergency number
contacted the Lagos State Emergency team on the site with the number, who
arrived at the scene 25 minutes after (8:27am - 8:52am), and attended to the
helpless victim.
Alimoshotides asked residents at the scene
and gathered that many of them were oblivious of the designated emergency
number.
Speaking with Alimoshotides, a resident in
the area, simply referred to as Mayowa confessed that he did not know the
number.
“I commend the person that called the emergency
number and I like the swiftness of the response team. I wonder what would have
happened to that man. I am not even aware of the number,” he said.
Another eyewitness, Mr. Timothy when asked if he
knew the emergency number simply retorted, “I don’t know.”
A lady who did not want her name mentioned in print,
while commending the effort of Lagos State in taken the right steps at making
Lagos a better place, said that she did not know the number.
In a Whatsapp chat with Chairman of Igando-Ikotun
LCDA, Elder Ademola Oshibeluwo, he did not support the fact that residents were
not aware of the emergency number.
“That’s not true because we sent it to everyone at
all our meetings.” Oshibeluwo stated.
